The role ensures centralized support globally from the Budapest hub. 
The Chief Privacy Counsel serves as the senior legal leader within the global privacy function, providing expert legal advice on data protection, information governance, and emerging technology risks. Reporting to the Chief Privacy Officer (CPO), this role partners closely with the Global Privacy Program Manager to ensure the enterprise privacy program is legally sound, operationally effective, and aligned with global regulatory obligations.
The position based in Budapest and will reporting to the CPO in US and should work closely with different stakeholders globally. The position requires some travelling also, otherwise hybrid working is available. 

This position focuses on legal interpretation, advisory, and risk mitigation, while the Global Privacy Program Manager leads program execution, operations, and implementation.


Key Responsibilities

The Legal Counsel serves as the senior legal leader within the global privacy function, providing expert legal advice on data protection, information governance, and emerging technology risks. Reporting to the Chief Privacy Officer (CPO), this role partners closely with the Global Privacy Program Manager to ensure the enterprise privacy program is legally sound, operationally effective, and aligned with global regulatory obligations. 
Responsible for handling a variety of general corporate and commercial legal projects for the organization. 

This position focuses on legal interpretation, advisory, and risk mitigation, while the Global Privacy Program Manager leads program execution, operations, and implementation.

 Legal Advisory & Privacy Risk Oversight

  • Provide authoritative legal interpretation of global privacy and data protection laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, LGPD, PIPL, DPDP)
  • Advise business leaders, product teams, and functional stakeholders on privacy risks and mitigation strategies
  • Support the CPO in defining enterprise privacy risk tolerance and legal strategy

Partnership with Privacy Program Leadership

  • Serve as legal counterpart and on-level peer to the Global Privacy Program Manager
  • Provide legal review and guidance on privacy policies, standards, and controls developed under the privacy program

Regulatory Compliance & Investigations

  • Advise on compliance obligations and legal exposure related to global privacy laws and regulatory developments
  • Support regulatory engagement strategy, including inquiries, audits, and enforcement actions
  • Provide legal oversight for data subject rights processes and regulatory response frameworks
  • Partner with internal stakeholders on documentation, defensibility, and audit readiness

Product, AI & Technology Legal Support

  • Provide legal guidance on Privacy by Design and Default within product development lifecycles
  • Advise on AI governance, automated decision-making, and emerging technology risks

Commercial & Contracting Counsel

  • Lead legal review and negotiation of data protection provisions in customer, vendor, and partner agreements
  • Advise on cross-border data transfers, DPAs, SCCs, and related mechanisms
  • Support procurement and third-party risk management through privacy/legal expertise

Incident Response & Litigation Risk

  • Provide legal support for privacy aspects of security incidents and data breaches
  • Advise on notification obligations, regulatory exposure, and litigation risk
  • Partner with cybersecurity, communications, and executive leadership during crisis response

Qualifications

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent required; active bar membership

Experience

  • 5–10+ years of legal experience, with significant focus on privacy, data protection, or technology law
  • Experience advising global organizations on complex, cross-border privacy matters
  • Strong background in commercial contracting and regulatory compliance
  • Experience collaborating with privacy program or operational teams in a matrixed environment
  • Strong project management and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and organizational skills with independent work initiative, sound judgment, diplomacy
  • Proficiency in English 
  • Proficiency in Excel and ERP systems (SAP preferred)
  • Strong stakeholder management and negotiation skills
  • Ability to work cross-functionally in international environments 


Certifications (Preferred)

  • CIPP (E/A/US), CIPM, CIPT or equivalent
